Jim
MacDonald, MAC DVD's 'Transferring'
Low Costs on to the Customer
Are
you one of those people who like
to share your family home movies
with friends and relatives who live
far away but never get around to
it? Have you recently invested money
in a new DVD player and looking
for something to watch? Then there
is a new business in Deep River
that may help you.
Jim
MacDonald, a recent graduate of
Mackenzie High School, recently
started a business that transfers
traditional VHS tapes on to DVD.
Jim specializes in transferring
home movies to DVD at a very reasonable
cost. Part of Jim’s business appeal
is that he does not get involved
with transferring commercial products,
so he is able to keep his costs
down for his customers. Jim points
out that the advantage of DVD is
that families can make multiple
copies and mail out to friends and
relatives at a very low cost. Jim
was able to start his company as
part of the Summer Company Program
administered by Enterprise Renfrew
County. This countywide initiative
provides up to $1500 to local students
to state up a new company.
Jim
has spent many years video editing
and working around film and video.
In fact, Jim is enrolled at Queen’s
University in the Film Studies Program,
and he plans to relocate his business
to Kingston to help offset his tuition
costs. As Jim points out, “I have
always enjoyed film editing and
looking forward to building up a
solid base of customers over the
next few months. I will continue
in Kingston…but on a much smaller
scale. I am not making millions
right now…but give me four years
after I finish Queen’s!” Given Jim’s
determination and creativity, he
may just make his prediction come
true!
Jim
is one of only seven students in
Renfrew County to successfully qualify
for the Enterprise Renfrew Business
Program. The competition is a program
of the Ontario Ministry of Economic
Development and Trade. It is organized
by Enterprise Renfrew County, a
non-profit governmental business
development agency funded by the
Ontario Government, the County of
Renfrew and the Town of Renfrew.
The Pembroke Campus of Algonquin
College is the major sponsor of
the 2004 Business Plan Competition.
Jim can be reached at 584-3174.
