Thank-you to every business owner who submitted an application

COVID-19 Business Development Fund

In partnership with the County of Renfrew, the City of Pembroke, and the Ottawa Valley Tourist Association, Enterprise Renfrew County is excited to announce that we will begin receiving applications on June 15, 2020 for a fund that will support businesses as they look to pivot, recover and succeed in a business environment affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The efforts of the Renfrew County Economic Task Force recognized early on that business owners were seeking funds that would assist them to find new technologies, methodologies, or procedures that would assist them with adjusting to a new model of serving their customers. In response, funds have been dedicated towards a fund that will provide some assistance towards these goals and will be available within a short turnaround period so that interested companies may quickly make changes and allow them to generate revenue and, in some cases, retain or hire employees.

The fund will provide up to $5,000 (non-repayable) per business and will focus on the following areas of transformation:

  • E-business solutions
  • Marketing and customer engagement
  • Service delivery improvements
  • Other creative solutions/ideas for expansion and sustainability

A business will be eligible to apply for this program if (some additional conditions apply, please refer to the application guide for full eligibilities and conditions):

  • it is an existing small business;
  • it is situated and is operating in the County of Renfrew or the City of Pembroke
  • it can demonstrate that business operations have been adversely affected by the COVID-19 crisis.

Priority consideration will be given to businesses that can demonstrate clear and substantial hardship resulting from a disruption of business operations as a result of the COVID-19 crisis.

Due to funding constraints, not all applications received may be successful. The fund is not intended to cover loss of revenue as a result of COVID-19 or existing costs of staying open during COVID-19.

Note: Application will be submitted to a grant review committee for review

Businesses can begin applying on June 15, 2020 with concepts being reviewed on a first come first served basis. Total number of grants will depend on the full amount of funding and may change over time as additional funding is sought out. Applications will not be received after the deadline of July 3, 2020.

Please contact Enterprise Renfrew County and the support team at one of the numbers listed below for further information. Please note, due to COVID-19 working restrictions, staff are working remotely and may not be able to respond in an immediate fashion. Thank you for your patience.

The Summer Company Program is a unique opportunity, it enables students 15 to 29 years old to create their own job and learn what it takes to be an entrepreneur. The hands-on learning teaches the students all aspects of running a business. Summer Company business owners learn that operating a successful business is more than selling a service or product; they learn how to manage their business finances, building and controlling inventory, marketing, customer service, and the entire behind the scenes work that is required to operate a successful business including the dreaded paperwork.

Summer Company is funded by the Government of Ontario to enable young people to start a business by creating their own summer job and making their entrepreneurial dreams a reality, with funding support of up to $3,000. The program is available to Ontario students between the ages of 15 and 29, to start and operate their own business. Successful applicants will receive up to $1,500 to kick-start their business to help cover start-up costs and, upon successful completion; they will receive an additional award of up to $1,500.

Enterprise Renfrew County (ERC) administers the program on behalf of the Province of Ontario. In 2019, ERC handed out financial awards totaling $21,000 to local youth that completed the Summer Company Program. ERC Business Consultant, Colleen Sadler, says; “Summer Company is a portal to the entrepreneurial lifestyle. The program is the ideal opportunity for students to learn, network and create and launch their own unique business.”

In an effort to support the community with physical distancing and isolation, Enterprise Renfrew County has pivoted the way they typically administer their programming due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The Summer Company program will be delivered virtually, via tele/video conferencing until further notice.

Summer Company this year celebrates 20 years of developing student entrepreneurs in Renfrew County, has guided, and supported 144 young entrepreneurs to business success. This is a highly competitive program with only seven (7) spaces available; we encourage students to apply at the earliest opportunity.

This program gives students the chance to run their own business with limited risk and the potential to earn and learn more than they would as an employee at another summer job. With Summer Company, students create their own job: a job that no one else can apply for.

We need to encourage and support our young entrepreneurs to reach for their dreams, as they will determine the future success of our economy in the global marketplace.

Starting your own business requires a leap of faith. But the many positive attributes, including independence and the ability to balance work and family are attrative, and many Ontarians appear eager to take the plunge.

The PARO Centre for Women's Enterprise is one of Canada's most successful business support and networking organizations. As a not-for-profit social enterprise, we collaborate to empower women, strengthen small business and promote community economic development across the North of Ontario.PARO is quite simply the best place for women who are ready to start, grow or promote their business. It must be applied both to our personal and working life in order to be successful.

Click Here for the complete handbook prepared jointly by the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services, ServiceOntario and the Office of the Public Guardian and Trustee for Ontario, Charitable Property Program of the Ministry of the Attorney General.

1.1 Introduction

The purpose of this handbook is to provide general information on the nature of a not-for-profit corporation and guidelines on how to incorporate such a corporation. This handbook also provides basic information on incorporating charitable corporations, which are a special type of not-for-profit corporation.

Not-for-profit corporations incorporated in Ontario are governed by the Corporations Act and the Regulations made under it. Incorporation of not-for-profit corporations under the Act is at the discretion of the Minister (or his delegate). This is in contrast to ‘incorporation as of right’ for business corporations incorporating under the Business Corporations Act. Certain pertinent sections to the Act and the Regulations are included in this handbook. The reader is, however, referred to the Corporations Act and the Regulations to examine those sections not set out here. .......

“Registering” a business most often refers to registering the name of a business. In Ontario, it is a legal requirement to register your business name if any of the following applies:

Sole proprietorships (one owner) carrying on business under a name other than the individual’s full name;
Partnerships carrying on business under a firm name other than the full names of the partners;
Corporations carrying on business under a name other than their corporate name;
An existing general partnership or limited partnership registering a business name different from the registered firm name;
Limited liability partnerships;
Extra-provincial limited liability partnerships;
And extra-provincial limited liability companies

Where can I register my Business?

There are 4 ways to register your business:

By Internet

i) Service Ontario:

Registering requires Netscape Communicator 4.08 or higher, or Internet Explorer 4.0 or higher. Immediate registration if completed between the regular business hours of 8:30am to 6:00pm Monday to Friday, (you can print a copy from your computer) for a fee of $60.00 payable by credit card (Visa, Mastercard or American Express).

If registration is completed during regular business hours a Master Business License is printed off from your computer right away followed by an electronic savable copy which can then be printed off if necessary) within 2 business days if a valid email address is provided.

If no email address is provided a copy will be mailed to you within 10 business days. If done outside the hours of operation or on statutory holidays or Remembrance Day, allow up to 2 weeks for delivery of the Master Business License.

A name search can also be done online for a fee of $8.00.

ii) The Canada Revenue Agency:

Registration requires Netscape Communicator 4.x or higher (but not 6.0), or Internet Explorer version 4.x or higher (version 5.5 may require a service pack). Registration takes about 30 minutes and costs $60 (payment by credit card only).

Name searches are not available with this method of registration.

iii) From an OBC (Ontario Business Connects) computer terminal

Service Ontario Centre

Registering at an OBC computer takes about 30 minutes and costs $60. Searches of sole proprietorship, general partnership and corporate trade style names are available at the workstations for $8 per name.

400 Pembroke Street East
Pembroke, ON K8A 3K8

316 Plaunt St. South
Renfrew, ON K7V 1R6

By Mail

Mail registration requires “Form 1” (Registration under the Business Names Act-Sole Proprietorship/Partnership), takes 4-6 weeks and costs $80.

Registration under the Business Names Act-Sole Proprietorship/Partnership

Registering a business name does not give you exclusive rights to the use of the name. You can conduct a name search of existing sole proprietorships and partnerships in Ontario, however this name search is optional as sole proprietorship and partnership names are not protected. You can conduct name searches at an OBC computer ($8 per name) or by mail ($12 per name).

To protect a business name you must incorporate or apply for a trademark.

More information on registering a business name or partnership

Registration Expiry/Renewal

A business name registration is effective for five years. To continue using the name it must be renewed before the expiry date set out on the registration and a renewal fee must be paid. The registrant is responsible for keeping the information on the registration up to date and to renew the licence on time. Note: The Branch does not issue reminders.

Be it Wilno, Renfrew, Pembroke, Arnprior, Barry’s Bay or anywhere else in this, the largest county in Ontario, this is where we call home. Ever consider why? Well the answer to this question will no doubt be a choice of lifestyle based on ease of access, friendliness, affordable, relaxed pace and a host of other good reasons that we share and can relate with.

Living in Renfrew County is a choice we have now made. Shopping in Renfrew County is a choice we make – sometimes. We choose to live in Renfrew County because it provides the lifestyle we want for ourselves and our families. However, when it comes to purchasing goods and services how many of us really look within Renfrew County before venturing elsewhere.

Remember there is a link between you and your local goods and service provider – the choice to live here.

Granted, for some the trip to “big” cities like Ottawa and Peterborough is a special event and a shopping spree might be combined with a visit or entertainment and dining. So outside of the entertainment and visiting factor, consider the cost of these trips in terms of gas and time when only shopping for goods and services.

Then consider for a moment that within Renfrew County the goods, services, fresh locally grown produce, poultry and meat products are here close at hand. Large multinational and Canadian based stores are now located in Renfrew County that match and sometimes exceed the size of the same stores in Kanata, Ottawa, Peterborough and Kingston.

Of course the smaller locally owned and operated retail and service outlets are plentiful throughout the County. The locals who own and serve in these stores are friendly, knowledgeable, caring and often know who they are serving. Repairs, and warranty matters are handled easily and often on site by the local merchant. Farmers markets are abundant and provide locally grown, daily picked produce that hasn’t been handled countless times and travelled hundreds or thousands of miles to reach us.

Price, selection, quality, freshness, guarantees and healthy choices are what consumers are looking for when shopping today and so to the local merchants when stocking their shelves. So where price, quality, and services are comparable support the local economy and keep your money in Renfrew County – Shop local!

Consider these facts the next time a purchase is made;

Employment: Local businesses employ local people--your neighbors, your relatives, your friends and you.

Taxes: When you shop locally, your purchasing dollars contribute to local sales tax and support property, school and payroll taxes.

Quality: Local merchants care about their reputations. They want customers to be satisfied and will handle follow-up personally.

Customer Service: Scheduled maintenance, repairs and servicing will be easily available from local merchants who care about their customers and often get to know them personally.

Selection: Remember that you help create demand in your community for the products and services that you desire. Most merchants are pleased to help you with your selection, offer suggestions or place a special order.

Economic Development: Your local spending dollar recirculates five times throughout our community. Send it out of town and it is gone forever.

Save Money and Time: Local merchants are only a local phone call away, and they compete locally, which makes it easier to comparison shop.

Community Support: Local business supports area sports and cultural events.

Environment: Less time on the road means fewer gas emissions.

Way of Life: Preserve our rural way of life by keeping your business in Renfrew County.

Buy Local Today and Everyday!

Marketing is a strategic way that you are going to take your product or service from your business to your clients. You have to have extensive knowledge about your customers and your competitors. You need to understand current market opportunities upon which you want to base your business.

You must satisfy your customers’ needs, attitudes, buying habits and desires. You may begin with assumptions but you need to support your ideas with solid data that you have gathered through reliable resources.

You will need to conduct Market Research.

Market research is when you gather, record and analyze information in an orderly fashion based on your customers’ preferences and spending habits. It is a way of getting to know your customers, the business environment and competition before you start your business. Knowledge of your customers will enable you to determine the market size and what determines their buying decisions.

Research will help confirm or challenge your idea of who your best customers are and what they are seeking in a product or service.
